CHANGE We Can Believe In

Majority of the world population celebrated the victory of Barrack Obama as the 44th President of the United States on the night of 4th November 2008 (US time). I believe majority of Malaysians wanted Obama to win too. Well, I'm not shy to say that I'm a big fan of Mr.Obama. I have started to follow the news of Obama about 2 years back when he announced his campaign for the Presidency.

I read his news, official websites, blogs and watched the many inspiring speeches over YouTube. And I did picked a thing or two from his campaign to be adopted for my own in the March 8 general election. I found it inspiring to talk about HOPE and CHANGE in political rallies. One thing we in DAP learned a lot from American politicians is "political messaging". What was Obama biggest selling point? CHANGE! Do you still remember DAP's slogan in the last GE? Just Change It! And our theme song - BERUBAH!

Can you believe how great was Obama's influence on me? I bought his book - "The Audacity of HOPE" and i read it cover to cover. I have never read a book cover to cover in my life. I love to read but never have the discipline to read a whole book. This guy is not only an excellent orator but a good writer as well.

A friend sms me 2 days ago and asked if there is ever a possibility of a Malaysian Chinese become our PM one day. I did not reply the sms and thought deep into the question. There is actually nothing stated in our Federal Constitution that disallow a non-Malay to be our PM. But I openly said that I do not believe it will happen in Malaysia in the next 30 years. We are still way behind from that.

Be that as it may, the most important issue for me is not whether a non-Malay can be a PM or otherwise but we must start to think out of the racial dichotomy. And it must start from the politicians, both sides of the divide. All political leaders in the country whether from BN or Pakatan must think and act as a Malaysian first rather as a Malay, Chinese or an Indian leader. Obama's inclusiveness and willingness to reach out to the other side (Republicans) is one of the key factor why he was successful. He does not just think as a Democrat but tried to put himself to understand the argument and values of the other side and find a common ground. This is something we should do in our Parliament instead of continuing with the daily verbal assaults across the aisles.

But it puzzled me that some top BN politicians are asking Malaysians to learn something about Obama's victory including the new MCA President Datuk Ong Tee Keat! Datuk, let me remind you that the very party you are leading now is STILL a "racially exclusive" party. And the brand of politics practiced by BN all this while and their modus operandi are the biggest contributor for the lack of national unity in the country today!

There are just too much too talk about Obama's victory and i intend to further the discussion in this blog...hope you can express your feelings here..

Americans especially the younger generations voted for Obama , meanwhile the older ones favor Mc Cain.

Americans voted for a change becuase the American economy suffered under the utterly incapable Bush.

Americans had created a new history whereby a 1st African American citizen was voted to lead this superpower nation.

Hi YB Loke,
I do believe that Obama's victory is much inspiring and encouraging.

But it's still too early to say that race and skin colour is no longer a factor in politics and elections.

Obama won because of an integration of many factors, i think. and i think we have got much to learn from his victory.
it's the way Obama handles, manages and exploits the new media; his age which attracted many of the young voters (<35v years old); the unpopular Bush administration; his rightly balanced oratory skills which always strike the right chord in the hearts of millions of ordinary Americans; McCain's burden; the Palin factor.

and while we rejoice in his victory, we shouldn't neglect McCain's graceful exit and concession speech. knowing how to admit one's failure with such gracefulness is still yet to be seen here.

i appreciate the fact that Obama acknowledge the difficult journey ahead. i'm glad he realises that this is only the beginning...

i hope he'll be the honest president whom he has promised to be.

yes, we have much to learned from this US election and i hope there will be more discussion on it.

President Obama said:

1) irregardless of Americans who had voted for him or not he will still be serving his people wholeheartedly as he is already the people's President representing all United States of America citizens

2) he had also openly admitted that there's not going to be a quick fix soultions to the nation's economic problems it's not going to be resolved in a yr or 2 yrs time it may take more than a term to see the results.

It took the Americans over 200 years and 43 presidents before they elected a black man as their president. Our nation is just 51 this year. We still have a long way to go...
